The events of the past week have largely been a heightened version of the regular fun of St Andrews, so I'll make this post short. I must say, though, it was really nice to finally be in town for the weekend. As you might guess, the Americans were more than ready to share their love of fancy dress(costumes), and celebrate multiple Halloween themed parties. On thursday of last week, John Burnet had a formal meal in which a Halloween costume was required for entry into the dining hall. It was a blast to look around and see vampires, lions, and robots as I had my evening soup and potatoes. As for myself, I dressed up as a scarecrow. Having already been Aladdin for a different event, I was in the market for cheap costumes. I made my scarecrow out of an old Hawaiian grass skirt. I also had grass coming out of my hands and feet (which you cannot see here). The guy next to me is my good friend Bruce. He was dressed as Roadkill (had tire-marks on his back) picture courtesy of Facebook.

Tonight was Guy Fawkes/Bonfire Night. If any of you are familiar with the film, "V for Vendetta", you will know of Guy Fawkes. He was an early 17th century restorationist who was involved in a plan to bomb Parliament in protest of the discrimination of English Catholics. It was unclear to me how the British people felt about Guy Fawkes (seeing him as a hero or a terrorist). Either way, the night was excellent, being defined by bonfires(at which an effigy of Fawkes is burnt) and fireworks(symbolising the bombing of Parliament(I think)).
It was a chilly evening, but a fire on the beach in the shadow of a castle--with fireworks in the background--made it all worth it.
